Environment

Hima Cement is committed to conducting business consistent with sustainable development principles; to continuously improve environmental performance and to make a positive contribution to nature and society. We have put in place environmental management systems to translate our commitment into actions. We assess and measure our environmental impact, continuously improve processes, tools and capabilities and promote best practice in our operations and the industry.

Our Hima Plant in Kasese attained the EMS ISO 14001:2015 Certification back in 2015 and today, all our operations have attained the Intergrated Management System ISO certification that covers 45001:2018, 9001:2015 and 14001:2015 standards.

Decarbonization of our operations

Hima Cement is taking substantive action to address the challenge of climate change. By 2030, our aim is to significantly lower our specific Net CO2 emissions per ton of cement to 200 kg CO2 per ton of cementitious material. We will reduce our clinker factor and increase our use of alternative fuels and raw materials. We are intensifying the utilization of alternative fuels, thereby reducing our reliance on traditional fossil fuels and subsequently reducing our CO2 emissions. Additionally, we are fine-tuning our product mix to ensure it aligns with our emission reduction goals.

Water Management Program

Water conservation is at the forefront of our sustainability initiatives - we are committed to reducing fresh water withdrawal and consumption in our operations through water recycling, rainwater harvesting.
To fully understand our water footprint and to be able to effective improvement measures, we have introduced water recording and reporting systems at all our operational sites. We also put measures to further minimise the environmental impacts of our discharges through water treatment and recycling.

Biodiversity Management

We are proactively implementing measures to enhance the biodiversity around our plants and quarries. This is through ensuring that all quarries have rehabilitation plans and that they are being implemented. We have also made a commitment to plant 100,000 trees annually where we donate tree seedlings from our nursery beds to the communities around.
