New Jinja Nile Bridge
New Jinja Nile Bridge is a significant infrastructure project in Uganda, crossing the River Nile in the town of Jinja. The bridge was built to replace the old Owen Falls Dam Bridge, which had become structurally unsound and inadequate for modern traffic demands.
It serves as a critical link in the Northern Corridor, a major trade route connecting landlocked countries like Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo to the Kenyan port of Mombasa. The bridge also enhances the appeal of Jinja, a popular tourist destination known as the "Source of the Nile."
It is a cable-stayed bridge, characterized by its elegant design and the use of cables to support the bridge deck. The bridge was constructed by a consortium of Japanese companies including Zenitaka Corporation and Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd.
