Hima Cement Takes the Stage at 2025 UCEM Energy Convention

Kampala, Uganda – Uganda’s transition to a greener future took center stage at the 2025 UCEM Energy Convention, and Hima Cement was right at the heart of the conversation, not just as a participant, but as a recognized leader in industrial energy transformation.

Representing the company at this year’s convention was David Mugagga, Head of Regulatory Affairs at Hima Cement, who joined a high-profile panel of energy experts to discuss clean energy integration within industrial operations. His contribution sparked critical dialogue on how manufacturers can reduce emissions without compromising performance.

Hima Cement has proved that thermal energy doesn’t need to be carbon-intensive. It can evolve in parallel with clean energy, Mugagga said

He outlined the company’s ambitious journey toward carbon reduction, with over 50% of Hima’s fuel sources now derived from renewable biomass. These include agro-waste, plastic waste co-processing, waste heat recovery systems, and the introduction of hybrid energy models across operations.

One of the standout examples he shared was the Hima Coffee Project, which has distributed more than 16 million coffee seedlings in the Rwenzori region, an initiative that pairs environmental sustainability with community upliftment. It illustrates how corporate climate action can deliver both ecological and social value.

Mugagga also used the platform to advocate for regulatory innovation, urging stakeholders to consider a "sandbox" approach, a progressive policy framework that would allow companies to pilot clean energy technologies under guided conditions. He emphasized that such mechanisms could accelerate Uganda’s shift to sustainable fuel alternatives across all sectors.

The convention echoed a growing national momentum toward climate resilience, and Hima Cement’s active participation reaffirmed its position at the forefront of Uganda’s energy evolution.

By embracing innovation, reimagining waste, and partnering with communities, Hima Cement continues to push the boundaries of what sustainable industry can look like, proving that heavy industry and clean energy are not mutually exclusive, but powerful allies in shaping Uganda’s green future.
