Health and Safety

Health and safety is a core value at the heart of everything we do, guiding our operations every day and every shift. Our goal is to achieve zero harm to people, prioritizing the safety and wellbeing of our employees, contractors, and communities. To ensure a consistent and effective approach, we have developed robust H&S standards, procedures, and governance systems, supported by our HSE Management system. This framework allows us to identify and mitigate risks, implement critical controls, and monitor their effectiveness, all with the aim of creating a safe working environment and preventing accidents.

Occupational Health and Safety at Our Sites

We are committed to minimizing and preventing risks for our employees, customers, suppliers, and other third parties by proactively managing health and safety in all aspects of our operations. To achieve this, we conduct regular, comprehensive risk assessments at all our locations to identify potential hazards. These assessments enable us to evaluate the severity and likelihood of risks, allowing us to implement targeted protective measures. Our approach includes reviewing operational procedures, providing the necessary safety equipment, and ensuring that all personnel are trained in safety protocols. By continuously monitoring and updating our risk management strategies, we ensure that safety remains a top priority and that all stakeholders are safeguarded from potential harm.

Road Safety
Ensuring road safety remains another key priority at Hima Cement, given our heavy reliance on transportation for our operations. In 2016, we started a road safety program with three main components;

Driver Management

We have a well-structured driver management system in place that ensures that only qualified drivers are allowed to drive our trucks. We also work with a number of contracted transporters who are mandated to follow the Hima Cement Road Transport Policy. All Drivers must have experience above five years in driving trucks; they undergo both medical and physical tests to ensure that they are fit to drive. Drivers also undergo mandatory defensive driving training on a strict curriculum and must pass an assessment before they are allowed to transport Hima Cement Products.

Journey Management

To make certain that standards are maintained from end to end, Hima Cement manages journeys and trips to eliminate driver fatigue, dangers of night driving, consumption of alcohol and other ills that compromise road safety.

In-Vehicle Monitoring Systems

In addition to the above, all trucks working for Hima Cement are fitted with GPS a device that continuously inform and updates the location and speed of the truck. Alerts are generated every time a driver exceeds the speed limit. The GPS system also ensures drivers do not drive at night, as statistics show that night driving is more dangerous than day time driving
